Over the course of the last few years, the College Democrats have been busy getting out the vote for Democratic candidates and representing Democratic issues on campus. See below for a description of our past events.

Spring 2007

  • Took approximately 20 members to Harrisburg for the Rally in the Rotunda to lobby for higher state appropriations and lower tuition
  • Sent members to the Pennsylvania State College Democrats Conference in Harrisburg on the weekend of March 24th. 

Fall 2006:

  • Worked the polls all day on Election Day, helping to deliver Centre County for Bob Casey, Ed Rendell, and Scott Conklin, and congregated at Wegman's to watch the results come in together.
  • Hosted a rally for Bob Casey in the HUB Auditorium with around 400 in attendance, including the Clarion University College Democrats.
  • Hosted a rally for Governor Ed Rendell and local candidates Jon Eich, Scott Conklin, and Don Hilliard in the HUB with over 300 in attendance.
  • Participated in the NAACP Presents... Debate with the College Republicans.
  • Registered approximately 250 voters in the student precincts and worked closely with Represent Penn State to register students and Get Out The Vote.
  • Canvassed for Scott Conklin as often as our members could. We also hosted a Campus Invasion on October 15th -- Students from across the state came in to help canvass for Scott.
  • Held a pizza party for Scott Conklin (our homeboy), candidate for PA State Representative on Wednesday September 20th. Scott provided the pizza and we discussed his race and politics in general.

Spring 2006:

  • "Free Speech in the Classroom" Press Conference, countering conservative ideologue David Horowitz's Book Tour Visit
  • Governor Ed Rendell Speech in the HUB to 250 students
  • Attended Centre County Democratic Party events like the Governor Ed Rendell Luncheon, monthly breakfasts, and the Centre County Democrats Spring Banquet
  • Canvassed for PA Candidates in Downtown State College in preparation for Spring Primary
  • Joined Represent, the new non-partisan voter registration coalition
  • Fundraising Campaign
  • 2006 Annual Trip to the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C.
  • Social Activities including an End-of-the-Year Celebration

Fall 2005:

  • Meet the Local Candidates Event for PSU Students featuring candidates for State College Borough Council, State College Area School Board, and Centre County District Attorney
  • Advised and worked with local candidates on appealing to Penn State students for the 2005 local elections
  • "Get Out the Vote" or GOTV efforts for the 2005 elections, increasing the student turnout by around 100% from 2003
  • Fundraising Campaign
  • Lobbied for various Democratic issues, including supporting the Centre County Civil Liberties Resolution
  • Spaghetti Dinner to Support Hurricane Katrina Victims
  • Attended the PA College Democrats Western Regional Conference
  • Attended Centre County Democratic Party events including monthly breakfasts and the Fall Dinner with State Treasurer Bob Casey
  • Social Activities including weekly sports games

Spring 2005:

  • Anti-Iraq War/Bush Inauguration Protest in Washington D.C.
  • Lobbied against a proposed landfill in Centre County and other local issues
  • Attended the 2005 PA State Federation of College Democrats Conference at Dickinson College
  • Featured Speakers at the April Centre County Dems Breakfast for the featured topic of "Student Turnout in 2004 and Redefining the Democratic Party" to a crowd of approximately 150 people
  • 2005 Annual Trip to the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C.
  • Social Activities including an End-of-the-Year Celebration
  • Protest to President George W. Bush's visit to PSU during Summer Session 2005

Fall 2004:

  • Voter Registration Drive and Canvass - registering over 2000 Democratic students
  • “Get Out The Vote” (GOTV) or Targeted Voter Turnout of 13 Precincts with Large or Entire Student Populations - increasing the student Democratic vote by 244% from 2000
  • PSU Campaigns for John Kerry for President, Joe Hoeffel for U.S. Senate, Jon Eich for State Representative, and Rich Rogers for State Representative
  • Michael Moore Homecoming Speech in the Bryce Jordan Center to more than 10,000 people
  • Howard Dean Speech for the PSU Distinguished Speakers Series in Eisenhower Auditorium to 5,000 people - College Democrats as a co-sponsor
  • Teresa Heinz Kerry Campaign Speech in the Schwab Auditorium to 1,000 people inside, approximately 4,000 outside
  • Other sponsored speeches in conjunction with the Centre County Democratic Party or the John Kerry Campaign, including a HUB speech by Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack and a Post-Homecoming Game Rally with Governor Ed Rendell and PSU and Steelers Running Back Franco Harris
  • Sponsored rally with Moms Opposing Bush (MOB) on the steps of Old Main
  • Silent Protest to President George H.W. Bush's campaign visit
  • Large Fundraising Drive
  • Debates with other student political groups including the College Republicans and YAF
  • Social Events including several Debate Watching Parties and an Election Night Party
